ATTRACTIONS  -PLACES TO VISIT

NATURE:

Fårö is Gotlands northern point, with it´s own unique architecture, dialect, and rocky beaches. Here is where the famous director Ingmar Bergman lived and made some of his most acclaimed works. For example, Scenes from a Marriage.

When in Fårö: Visit the nature reserve Langhammars, a landscape intact since the 17th Century with rocky beaches and the Fishing village, Helgumannen.

In Digerhuvud you will find the beach most often featured on Gotland´s postcard. This is the area with most Sea stacks in Gotland called “Raukar”.

Sudersand is the most popular beach in Fårö and perfect for children. There are several restaurants and fishing villages along the east coast.

North of Gotland you will find Gotska Sandön -in english meaning, Sandy Island. This island is a National Park in the middle of the sea. The island is all sand dunes.

Bäsketräsk is Gotland’s largest nature reserve. Bäsketräsk has Gotland’s largest lake surrounded with a beautiful forest and meadowland.

Stigmyr

Around the mire Stigmyr you will find a remarkable landscape, watch old pines struggle against the wind and enjoy the scent of buttlerfly orchids in the air.

Lummelunda is a community mostly known for the cave Lummelundagrottan. It´s possible to enter the cave and see the beautiful dripstones and interesting fossils. Here, there is also a geological museum and café.

When visiting the cave, make time to also visit the charming private  fishing museum in Nyhamn nearby, with a collection of ancient fishing tools,

The Bird Islands: Stora Karlsö and Lilla Karlsö. Both Islands are famous for unique bird watching and captivating nature.

MUSEUMS

Get to know more about Gotland´s 8000 years of history, from the Stone Age to the present at the Gotland Historical Museum. It is really eight museums spread all over Gotland, five of them in Visby.

At the open air museum Bungemuseet you will find a collection of around 70 historical buildings brought from all over Gotland,   together they complete three villages from 16th 17th and 18th Century.

The Viking village: Vikingabyn: Here you will see a reconstruction of how a Viking village could have looked like, full of fun happenings for the entire family. Play Viking games, make handcrafts, eat and enjoy.

Villa Muramaris is an Italian villa 5 km from Visby. Villa Muramaris is a  former artist´s home where art exhibitions and concerts are held in the summertime. There is also a Restaurant where Italian inspired food is being served.

Watch Shakespeare in Swedish in the Roma Monastery Ruin, just a short drive from Visby.

On the stone beach in Lickershamn there is an outdoor theatre playing a historical drama called Jungfruspelet. The plays start at Sunset. Also in Swedish.

GARDENS

Gute Vineyard/ Gute Vingård

Yes, there really does exist one Vineyard in Gotland, that produces wine from grapes grown here. Also Cider and different spirits are made here. Come and visit the vineyard, participate in tastings, and follow the process from wine to bottle. There is also a restaurant here.

Krusmyntagården

Krusmyntagården is an aromatic herb garden, shop and restaurant. Hundreds of herbs are grown here, according to ancient traditions. Sit in the garden and  take in the different scents, listen to the nearby sea. Relax.

Roma Kungsgård

Roma Kungsgård is in the very middle of Gotland and being centrally located, it´s a historical meeting place in Gotland. Here you will find crafts and designs, a glass factory, the ruins of Roma Abbey, an herb garden, and café.  Take a walk around this historic site or participate in the different crafts.

There are numerous cafés and restaurants in Gotland to choose from. Just make sure you don´t leave the island before trying their National Dessert,  Saffron Pancake with jam and whipped cream.
